Shorts spotlight: The Sparkling

Monday, July 30th, 2012

What is THE SPARKLING? Why it’s M Night Shyamalan’s new movie of course.

Synopsis: Puppets Harry and Luther somehow land jobs as caretakers to the legendary Stanley Hotel.  Upon arrival Luther is immediately overtaken by an evil spirit, while Harry learns about his new found gift of telepathy.  Adventure, excitement, and outrageous nudity awaits the pair around every corner!  Who will outlast who in this thrill-a-minute parody based on a famous Colorado legend.

Director: Artfacestudios

Laugh Track: How much time and energy did you spend making it?

Artfacestudios: “The Sparkling” was filmed on location at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. Some scenes were finished in our green screen room if they needed touching up or another layer of video. We spent one sleepless night rampaging through the hotel unsupervised with puppets and a bunch of liquor. Several hours were spent at the bar. Upon receiving the invite to “go ahead and cross any lines that keep you out, and have fun” from the owner and bartender we continued our evening in a drunken rage throughout the entire hotel… I would imagine we created several of the “unexplained” sounds the ghost tour might have heard.

What’s funnier than romance antics? We present THE DATE

Synopsis: When Ben Roy sets up his roommate, Rob Gleeson on a blind date with his friend, Rob quickly discovers that true feelings sometimes make themselves known in unusual ways.

Director: Ben Simkins

Laugh Track: How much time and energy did you spend making the movie?

Ben: Two days of shooting and three days to coax Ben Roy out of the car and on to set once in full makeup.

Do you think it was worth all that time/energy?

This was my first directing a narrative short so the pure fact that it didn’t resemble a Cleveland steamer tangled up in former presidential hopeful, Pat Buchanan’s chest-hair… yeah, I’d call that a win.

No, honestly. Was it?

Do you really want me to cry?! (more…)

Shorts spotlight: Webbed

The virtual just got more real.

Today’s spotlight is on WEBBED

Synopsis: JoeTheLegend323 seeks connection and community through a webcam until a termite infestation in his building forces him out of the virtual and into the reality.

Director: Zack Windheim

Laugh Track: How much time and energy did you spend making the movie?

Zack: We knew that if we wanted to make an entertaining film about video bloggers, we needed to spend more time and energy than the average video blogger does to tell you what their lunch tasted like. It took close to a year to finish the movie.

Do you think it was worth all that time/energy?

Was Titanic worth making?

No, honestly. Was it?

Was The Last Airbender worth making?

What’s the funniest thing that happened on set? And by funniest we mean the most horrible thing.

The strangest thing to happen on set was that our main actor had to improvise his own viral dance for three minutes in his boxers and that nothing accidentally popped out. When you watch the wide range of his dance moves in the film, it is pretty mind-blowing how that never happened.

Convince us why your film should win our top award. Best answer wins the award (joking…or are we?)

Webbed is a completely unique film that is based on the completely unique and bizarre world of vloggers on YouTube. It manages to make audiences laugh without the use of drugs, sex, or violence – all it needs are termites.

Shorts spotlight: Rocky Mountain Oysters – Antwon Thigrate

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

We could go for some cow balls right about now…

We present ROCKY MOUNTAIN OYSTERS – ANTWON THIGRATE

Synopsis: Diddy is an aspiring musician who has invented electroperaca, a genre of music that crosses electronica with opera. But he starts running into trouble when he meets Antwon Thigrate, another musician who also plays electroperaca – except he’s actually good.

Director: Sean Williams

Laugh Track: How much time and energy did you spend making the movie?

Sean: We’ve spent much of the past year making a feature-length film called Tokeasy, which basically took 60-80 hours a week for nine months straight, so making a short episode basically felt like a vacation.

Do you think it was worth all that time/energy? (more…)

Shorts spotlight: Tilting at Skyscrapers

Weirdest title ever goes to…

TILTING AT SKYSCRAPERS

Synopsis: When a gamer is overcome by his obsession, his neighbor must shepherd him home.

Director: Frank Stasio

Laugh Track: How much time and energy did you spend making the movie?

Frank: I had the idea swimming in my head for about 6 years. One night I got home and my computer screen was staring at me, just daring me to do something. So I sat down and finally started writing the script. It took me about 10 minutes to crank out the first draft. Very little changed from the first draft to the film. It took another 3 years before I could find someone to help me make it… (more…)
